Richard Strauss and his heroines

History/Music, Germany 2014

They are called Elektra, Salome and Daphne, Arabella, Ariadne and Danae - the unforgettable heroines created by Richard Strauss. For like hardly any other composer, Strauss succeeded in translating female emotions into music. The great Strauss interpreters Brigitte Fassbaender, Renée Fleming, Dame Gwyneth Jones and Christa Ludwig can not only sing a song about this, but also tell it movingly and impressively. And they do so in Thomas von Steinaecker's award-winning documentary Richard Strauss and His Heroines, which Arthaus Musik is now releasing on Blu-ray Disc. Last but not least, the film sets a memorial to Pauline - Richard Strauss' greatest heroine, muse and faithful companion in 55 years of eventful and moving marriage. SPECIAL FEATURE: "Richard Strauss - Sketch of a Life" The documentary film Richard Strauss - Sketch of a Life takes viewers to the Strauss Villa in Garmisch, family residence since 1908, where the spirit of the great composer, gifted conductor and convinced cultural politician still reigns today as it did during his lifetime. Richard Strauss was a strict head of the family, whose authority extended far beyond one death. In interviews, Gabriele Strauss-Hotter, Christian Strauss, Inge Borkh and Brigitte Fassbaender tell of a patriarch whose family was integral to his creative work.
