A Street that tells a Story

History/Society, Germany 2020

For their documentary film, the students portray the main street of their village, the Street of Peace. With the help of 78-year-old village chronicler Karin Hanusch, they find out what the individual houses used to look like, how the street and the people who live there have changed, and what stories have taken place there over the last 100 years. For their film, the students use a documentary technique: they compose the shots of the street and the houses so that they correspond to the image section of the historical archive photos, and hold the respective archive photo in the frame during the recording. The students superimpose the village chronicler's stories over the shots of the street, filling the images with history and stories. In addition, the class decided to follow the example of Chantal Akerman and make the Street of Peace tangible through a series of camera movements.
