Elizabeth befriends a group of bohemians, but feels particularly drawn to two of them: Evelyn Larkin, a radical socialist, and her lover Lawrence Kirbridge, a handsome, free-spirited poet. On the eve of her 21st birthday, while her parents are out of town, Lizzy invites the whole group to Eaton Place and feels humiliated when the Bellamys unexpectedly return home and throw everyone out. In her quest to prove that she is completely different from her parents, Lizzy is forced to take extreme measures, which leads to a fight with her parents and a painful discovery about Evelyn.
