Midsummer Night's Tango

Quirky humor, balmy summer nights, nostalgic tango sounds - and a trail personally blazed by cult director Aki Kaurismäki. Is the cradle of tango not in South America, but in Finland, as Kaurismäki claims? Three Argentine tango musicians travel from Buenos Aires to Finland to find the answer: singer Chino Laborde, guitarist Diego “Dipi” Kvitko and bandoneonist Pablo Greco. Of course, the road is the goal of this road trip, during which the musicians marvel as much at the rolling saunas for one as at the endless forests of the North and the tango tracks on which the taciturn Finns miraculously appear quite passionate. Naturally, this journey includes stops at some of Finland's finest tango performers. Among others, the Argentine trio meets Sanna Pietiäinen and a Finnish tango veteran with cult status: M. A. Numminen. Their innovative tango creations in Finnish and German combine entertainment and philosophy - and enthrall audiences* from toddlers to the elderly. Where else in the world would a rabbit and a cat dance a tango?
