Abendland

After a protest against deforestation, a masked activist (Stephanie Amarell) falls into a ravine. Injured and stranded, she wanders through the forest until she finally discovers a secluded commune whose masked residents are seeking an alternative to the failed German state. Omer Fast’s “Abendland” is a film that is as unsettling as it is thought-provoking, blending political allegory, social analysis, and a fairy-tale-like forest utopia. At its center is a climate activist wearing an Angela Merkel mask who, within this isolated community, is confronted with questions of identity, power, and belonging. Fast uses the consistent masking of his characters not only as an aesthetic device but also as a reflection on the dissolution of individual certainties in a present marked by crises. The boundaries between utopia and dystopia, freedom and control, community and exclusion remain deliberately blurred. Visually, *Abendland* captivates with its dense forest atmosphere and a visual language that oscillates between realism and a dreamlike state. The film requires a certain amount of leisure and the willingness to engage with a broad range of interpretations. In return, however, it rewards its audience with a multi-layered thought experiment on the state of German society and the fragile promises of political alternatives.
