Happy - My dad, his Thai girlfriend, and I

It's probably every daughter's worst nightmare: a postcard from Thailand that says, “My dear, I'm doing well here, eating pad Thai and drinking Chang beer. And I've met a woman who's the same age as you. Love, Dad.” Carolin's father Dieter has changed a lot in the last few years. After separating from his wife, Carolin's mother, he swapped his hiking boots for flip-flops and has been going to Thailand for a few weeks every year since then, sometimes alone, sometimes with friends – all of them over 60 and divorced. Her father says he has the time of his life there. His daughter thinks: Oh God, is my father now a sex tourist? Is Dieter now one of those men who stroll through the streets of Bangkok with a young, beautiful Thai woman on his arm? What is he doing there? Is this a search for happiness or a race against the time he has left? Her own father: not a hero, but an immoral perpetrator with last-minute panic? When things get serious and her father wants to marry his lover, Carolin travels to her homeland to understand the loner who is her father and who has always embarrassed her. As the director says: “Too loud. Too extroverted. Too eccentric.” Her father lives a secluded life as a hobby farmer in a half-timbered house in the Eifel region with many rooms and low ceilings, a lonely life that seems sad. In relentless duels, father and daughter grow closer: What does he long for? What is he afraid of? What does he want from Tukta, the Thai woman, and what the hell does she want from him? And—almost most importantly for Carolin—will her father actually marry Tukta? Is that right? Is he allowed to? Father and daughter travel together to Thailand, where the director suddenly finds herself a member of a new family, while Dieter is confronted with a completely different concept of love. And slowly Carolin begins to understand that there are no clear answers to her many indignant questions.
